A Power Quality Assessment of Electric Submersible Pumps Fed by Variable Frequency Drives under Normal and Failure Modes

This paper proposed a simplified modeling approach for power quality (PQ) assessment of Electric Submersible Pumps (ESP) systems supplied by the two-level, neutral-point-clamped three-level, and cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter VFD topologies. The switching function models their analytical expressions are to understand how they can create high-frequency components that might excite resonance mode in transmission cable or rotating shaft system. Voltage, current, motor airgap torque harmonics induced each topology balanced operation derived correlated PWM carrier operating frequencies. calculated based on Concordia’s transformation voltages currents αβ-plan. These harmonic represented form Campbell diagrams. An analysis under unbalanced conditions was also conducted CHB topology-powered ESP system with failed bypassed cells. investigated modulation technique is neutral-shift method enables operate line-line even if line-neutral unbalanced. effects modifying electrical spectrum using mechanical spectra analyzed. results Matlab/Simulink-based simulation show full model highly accurate both normal failure modes. consistent theoretical predictions graphically shown time frequency domains easy analysis. Hybrid experimental–numerical reduced-scale laboratory setup discussed confirm correctness suggested developments.
